VMCH & RI makes every effort to welcome the newcomers to a conducive environment and to ease the process of transition from home to college. Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute take serious cognizance of any activity by a student towards another student amounting to ragging.
- Students are strictly warned to abstain from such ragging activity as defined by MCI (given below) or face very serious consequences.

According to the Medical Council of India Notification New Delhi, Dated 3rd August 2009. The following constitutes ragging
Any conduct whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of harassing, teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any other student, indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student or asking the students to do any act or perform something which such student will not in the ordinary course and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of a fresher or a junior student.
Amended 31st Oct 2017. The following is also included in the definition of ragging.
- Any act of ( physical or mental abuse) including bullying and exclusion (targeted at another student) fresher or otherwise (on the ground of color, race, religion, caste, ethnicity, gender) including transgender (sexual orientation, appearance, nationality, regional origins, linguistic identity, place of birth, place of residence or economic background. The following activities are Punishable ingredients of Ragging:
- Abetment to ragging;
- Criminal conspiracy to rag;
- Unlawful assembly and rioting while ragging;
- Public nuisance created during ragging;
- Violation of decency and morals through ragging;
- Injury to the body, causing hurt or grievous hurt;
- Wrongful restraint;
- Wrongful confinement;
- Use of criminal force;
- Assault as well as sexual offenses or even unnatural offenses;
- Extortion
