Dr. T. Thirunavukkarasu

DEAN

Welcome to Velammal Medical College and Research Institute. Congratulations on choosing the noblest of professions. I am sure that this, your well contemplated choice is not one of compulsion or coercion but a calling, a reaffirmation of your intelligence, talent and Achievement.

The medical profession is information intensive, and academically demanding, long periods of study punctuated by very competitive post-graduation and super specialties entrance examinations. Every day new medical knowledge and technologies are added at astounding rates and these calls for late settlement in life and lifelong learning. Although today’s world is highly commercial the public image of the medical man is still intact as a ‘person who saves lives’. The patient trusts the doctor with his most valuable possession: ‘himself’. This is a humbling privilege, not experienced in any other profession, thus your knowledge and sincerity does make a huge difference to the life of a patient.

To survive medical school one must be genuinely interested to learn, be prepared to experience the ups and downs in the rigors of disciplined everyday studies. The foremost key to triumphant learning is to be aware and orient your mind projecting to patient and the treatment they will receive at your hands. The second is to understand that this is going to be tough. Create your own strategies to absorb knowledge. Every lecture missed, every test question unknown, and every day off school will create a gap in your familiarity with basic foundations. Take time to think through the steps of the major concepts and how they relate to each other. Learn to sieve off the mundane facts. Don’t be afraid to question even established facts. Watch, observe, and learn by doing and discussing. Shadow doctors and go around in the hospitals.

Don’t just stick to the textbooks. Read journal articles or medical blogs about topics that interest you. These will be more enjoyable, and will help bring together all of the facts that you are learning to show you how to apply them. There’s a big difference between “Book sense” and “Common sense”. “Book knowledge” Bedside knowledge”, you need both to succeed. You are not infallible and you do not need to do this alone. Make friends. You will need them. Some of them may be future colleagues. Don’t forget your family; parent’s constant encouragement is necessary to wade through failures and discouragements.

Keep your keen eyes trained to locate your interest for your future career, from the ever increasing amount of specialties sprouting in hospital and outpatient medicine. An infinite number of highly-regarded positions within research, business, law, and journalism that are waiting for creative and ambitious physicians like yourself after you graduate. Finally it’s not all about only medicine. Find time for hobbies, and social life. You do not need to become a one-dimensional human being. All the best as you go through the forge and become the useful instrument you were meant to be, committed to serve and the sword against diseases.

Dr. B.G.Mahesh Krishna

Vice Principal

It is with excitement that I welcome you to our challenging milieu.

I realize that your full dedication and focus has helped you choose to tread this path. Along with my congratulations I wish for you that this dedication and focus will not grow dim as you go through the seasons of rigor in your studies.

Just as questions yield answers, answers yield questions. Education produces knowledge. They must also produce doubt. The pursuit of truth is restless. We search for answers not by following prescribed paths, but by finding the right questions. Voltaire said “Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.” Many discoveries in medicine were preceded by questions? Learn to ask the right question about life, and the future.Academic seasons at Velammal are principally designed to enhance the intellectual, Physical and emotional development in a good citizen who practices medicine.
