About Department

The Department of Medical Gastroenterology of VMCH offers comprehensive health care for diseases of the Liver, Pancreas, Stomach, Intestines, Esophagus and Gallbladder. The department was established with outpatient department, endoscopy and colonoscopy units. The department had rapid growth in the successive years with establishment of therapeutic endoscopy unit, ERCP and Endoscopic Ultrasound unit. Currently the department has 5 dynamic consultants, one senior resident, one junior resident and six endoscopy technicians. Emergency services are provided round the clock. The surgical gastroenterology department in Velammal hospital is one of the earliest centers in South Tamil Nadu to prove laparoscopic cancer surgery was as effective as open surgery for Cancer Care. Further, it showed laparoscopic cancer surgery is much superior to open surgery in terms of patient comfort.

Today with the incomparable efforts of our expert team and their innovations all kinds of gastrointestinal cancers like the esophagus, cancer stomach, liver, pancreas, intestines, and uterus are efficiently managed. With the state of the art technologies in surgery and imaging like 3D laparoscopy, the magnification and visualization are now 10 times better than the human eye, making these surgeries translating to better outcomes.

HERNIA SURGERY:

Hernia repairs (inguinal and Incisional) are so common to have been under-rated as simple procedures that lack specialization. But the first time is the best time for a successful hernia outcome, both in the short term and in the long term.

Hernias when complicated can even be life-threatening. Repair of large and complex hernias requires special expertise and understanding of the principles. Hence, at Velammal Hospital we have a dedicated team for laparoscopic hernia surgeries and all laparoscopic hernia surgeries are being performed at the institute. The department performs complex procedures like anterior /posterior component separation, retro-rectus approach for incisional hernias, Venetian blinds technique for divarication of recti, concomitant ventral hernia repair with bariatric surgery, etc, Velammal Hospital have reported the lowest possible recurrence rate in the South Tamil Nadu. With the introduction of 4K laparoscopy, 3D imaging module and the da Vinci Robotic system results are very positive.

BARIATRIC SURGERY:

COLORECTAL SURGERY:

The division of colorectal surgery is aiming to offer comprehensive surgical care to patients with benign and malignant diseases of the Colon, Rectum and Anal canal. Emergency and Elective procedures about the Colon, Rectum, and Anus are performed by a dedicated team of Gastroenterologists specially trained and experienced in Colorectal Surgery. Using Laparoscopy and skill the team has successfully been able to avoid colostomy/ileostomy with sphincter preservation for hundreds of patients who otherwise might have needed a colostomy.

Out-patient procedures –

Self-illuminating Proctoscope is used for the detailed assessment of anal canal problems such as anal fistula, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures. For patients with first and second-degree hemorrhoids with bleeding, rubber band ligation of hemorrhoids is performed. Banding of hemorrhoids is a well-tolerated procedure and the patient can return home within a few hours. Sigmoidoscopy is performed in the outpatient clinic for selected patients and it offers the option of performing a biopsy as well if necessary.

Diagnostic services:

An enema is given to the patient following which sigmoidoscopy is performed. For the patient with chronic altered bowels and anemia Colonoscopy is offered. We can perform a colonoscopy on the same day for patients presenting to outpatients before 9.00 am. They are admitted to a room for bowel preparation following which colonoscopy is performed under sedation. We have a vastly experienced Radiology team helping us with Ultrasonography and CT scan.

Therapeutic services:

Patients with colonic and rectal polyps are offered colonoscopy and polypectomy as a day case procedure. For selected patients presenting with obstructed colonic cancer, the same day stenting service is provided.

HEPATO PANCREATO BILIARY SURGERY:

This department provides comprehensive treatment for diseases related to the liver, pancreas and biliary system. It is an exclusive department in south Tamil Nadu to provide Laparoscopic surgeries to various diseases like Gall stones, Bile duct stones, Choledochalcyst, Hydatid cyst, Acute & Chronic pancreatitis, Pseudocyst including cancers of liver, pancreas and gall bladder.

This center has the distinction of being the first in the south Tamil Nadu to perform laparoscopic Whipple’s operation, also called pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic cancer.
