The valedictory session of the world breastfeeding week celebration is held in a Velammal auditorium, at 10.00 am. The valedictory session started with invocation songs followed by lighting the inaugural lamp by the dignitaries. Velammal Medical College Hospital & Research institute Dean, Dr Thirunavukkarasu, addressed the gathering and spoke about the benefits of breastfeeding and the responsibility of the families to the breastfed mothers. A guest lecture was given by Dr Joy Marjorie Annal from Lady Doak College, Madurai. Dr Mohanty, Vice Principal, Dr Dhamodharan, Medical Superintendent and Dr K.S Chitra, H.O.D OBG honoured the winners of the competitions which were held this entire week. Dr Jenish Rajma, our senior paediatrician delivered a vote of thanks.
Dr Mathevan, H.O.D Paediatrics, VMCH & RI said “We have been celebrating WBW since1992, in spite of that; we are yet to achieve 100 percent exclusive breastfeeding. Recent data shows the rates of exclusive breastfeeding for six months and early initiation of breastfeeding within an hour is still 50 – 60% only. Hence, the need for continued awareness and this year’s theme urges the society and family to support the mother and share the responsibility”.
The main objective of the World breastfeeding week celebration was to inform people that “Breastfeeding is Nature’s Way, a God’s gift, the most natural food a baby can receive from mother”
