
World Breastfeeding Week – WBW
This World Breastfeeding Week – WBW (1-7 August 2021), we are celebrating to raise awareness and galvanize action on themes related to breastfeeding. This year’s theme is to emphasize the importance to protect breast feeding: Shared responsibility.
At Velammal Hospital, Department of Pediatrics has been organizing a variety of virtual and live activities for the Public and Doctors, Nurses, students of Medicine, Nursing & Allied health Sciences. Also, we have pledged an alliance with WABA to create awareness on breastfeeding.
Day 1 – August 1st, 2021
This year’s World Breastfeeding Week celebration was inaugurated by Dr Mathevan, our Pediatric Head of Department, who addressed the audience on the theme “Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility” through a virtual event. Following this, an online quiz was successfully conducted by Dr Veeramanikanda Kathiresh and Dr Lakshmi Durga from the department of Pediatrics, on breastfeeding for pre-final year MBBS students. Ms. Yuveda & Ms. Jelin Joshna emerged as the winners. The finalists went through five rounds of questions from which the two winners were chosen, in a stiff competition. More than 400 viewers from the department of faculty, Doctors, Medical students, nursing & AHS students have enjoyed watching the quiz online.
Day 2 – August 2nd, 2021
Our second day program was breastfeeding awareness for antenatal women. This awareness event was jointly conducted by the Department of Pediatric and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The event was held in the OBG demo hall, where moms and their families attended. Dr Nirosha, our senior pediatrician, addressed the crowd. The posters promoting breastfeeding awareness were displayed at OBG and Pediatric OPD by the students from Velammal nursing college. The judges for the competition were Dr Virgin Joena, Head of General Medicine and Dr K. S. Chitra, Head of OBG. The first place went to Subhashini.K and the second and third places went to Maheswari.K and Gunasundari.
